Machine Tools Also Part of Green Wave

- Doosan Infracore is now capable of producing 10,000 units per year, expects 2010 sales to be 50% higher than last year's total.

The world is now riding a wave of low-carbon green growth, and the movement has now reached the machine tools industry as well.

Doosan Infracore has introduced new heavy-duty turning centers and machining centers to produce parts used in wind turbines as well as a new die & mold machining center that is designed to use minimal cutting fluid. The VTS1620M is a heavy-duty turning center targeting the energy industry (wind farms and gas field development). It features the very large spindles and frame to machine pieces are large as 2,000mm in diameter and 1,600mm high, 20% more than other heavy-duty models can provide.

The DBC130L is designed to machine parts that can sustain very heavy loads such as those required by massive wind turbines. This heavy-duty, numerically-controlled boring machine performs precision work on pieces up to Y axis 2,500mm and as heavy as 20 tons.

The NX5000/6500 die & mold machining centers come with minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) systems that spray a mixture of high-pressure air with extremely small amounts (1.0㎛ or less) of cutting fluid onto the area being machined. Almost no wastewater and waste oil are generated.

The Machine Tools BG stepped up its marketing effort for these new models at the 14th annual Seoul International Machine Tools Show (SIMTOS 2010), held at the Korea International Exhibition Center (KINTEX) April 13-18. These environment-friendlier machines were among the 18 models on display at the Doosan Infracore booth. Booth visitors also were given a look at high-speed, highly-refined die & mold machining centers; next-generation, multifunction machining & turning centers; multifunction Swiss turning centers; and high-precision wire-cut electrical discharge machines. The lineup underscored Doosan Infracore's stature as the world's third largest machine tool maker.

Machine Tools BG Kim Jae-seop says: "New facilities investment in the IT and automotive parts industries has fully returned from the second half of last year. We are ready to respond to the increased demand with an annual output capacity of 10,000 units. We expect our factory to continue working at 150% the capacity utilization rate during the first half of this year and we are marketing our new models heavily. As a result, we expect annual sales to be 50% higher than they were a year ago."

SIMTOS has emerged as one of the world's five major trade shows for the machine tool industry. This year's event was attended by all the major Korean makers as well as such big names as Yamazaki Mazak, DMG, and Mori Seiki. More than 100,000 visitors came to the show.

Doosan Machine Tools at EMO 2009

The Machine Tool World Exhibition, promoted by the European Committee for the Co-operation among Machine Tool Industries (CECIMO), opened in Milan October 5-10. This is one of the world's four major events in the machine tool industry, along with IMTS in the US, JIMTOF in Japan and CIMT in China. This year, the 18th EMO, attracted more than 1,300 corporate participants from 35 countries.

Doosan Infracore was among them, exhibiting eleven high-performance, value-added machines (8 turning centers, 2 machining centers, and 1 numerically-controlled boring machine) especially selected to accommodate European customer needs. The world's machine tool makers have been suffering from a serious downturn in the face of the global economic crisis, but the Doosan Infracore Machine Tool BG went all out to promoting its wares.

Dealers and other visitors to the Doosan booth showed special interest in the 5-axis VC630, a high-speed, high-precision machining center capable of machining small and medium-sized parts with complex and exacting specifications as well as multiple items in small lots. They also were enamored by the Puma MX3100S, a multifunction turning center that is well suited for handling medium-sized and large parts for aircraft and automobiles. Another be attraction at the booth was live demonstrations of the Puma ST20G, developed exclusively in-house to machine very small parts for electronics and medical (prosthetics and dental) applications.

Diverse Preparations for the Economic Rebound

The Machine Tools BG is engaged in various activities, including attendance at the major trade events worldwide and heavy R&D investments, in advance of the upturn in the global economy. The BG is also hosting open house events and taking part in regional trade shows inside Europe. Expatriate employees from Korea and locally-hired people in Europe are stepping up their promotion of new models in the UK, Germany and Russia, where market conditions are already relatively favorable.

Meanwhile, ongoing process innovation activities are enhancing product quality and productivity, and engineers are being cultivated who are adept in multiple disciplines.

Local support for service and sales activities is also being strengthened. A new technical center is scheduled for opening in Turkey by the end of this year, with additional technical centers to be established in the Czech Republic, France, Sweden, and Spain in 2010.

The BG introduces 46 new models in preparation for economic recovery.

The Machine Tools BG held its 7th Doosan International Machine Tools Fair (DIMF 2009) at Changwon Plant 1 on May 13 and 14. On display were 46 strategic, next-generation models, including 18 turning centers, 22 machining centers and 6 electric discharge machines. Of special interest were Korea’s double column machining center and Swiss turn CNC lathe, both developed exclusively in-house by Doosan Infracore.

The double column machining center can accommodate pieces up to 200mm wider than other machines in its class can. This multifunctional machine boasts very high productivity and can perform heavy-duty cutting as well as precision machining of massive parts and molds needed in wind generators, shipbuilding and aircraft.

The Swiss turn is ideal for mass-producing small, high-precision parts for electric and electronic products as well as medical diagnostic machines. Thirty-one different tools can be attached onto this machine, which can handle the most complex tasks. It can also be programmed to work 24 hours a day without an operator, while the compact design enhances user-friendliness.

Intensive Marketing Aimed at Dealers from around the World.

The global sales volume of machine tools is 30-50 percent lower in 2009 than it was a year earlier. Amid this severe downturn, many of the major players have scaled down their presence at international trade shows or stopped going altogether. Hosting a private machine tools show of international stature is particularly unusual, which is why DIMF 2009 has attracted so much attention.

Despite the adverse conditions in the global industry, over 300 dealer representatives attended the event in Changwon. More than 2,000 other people with ties to the domestic or overseas machine tool industry also dropped in.

Instead of cutting back on decoration, the Machine Tools BG took advantage of this opportunity to engage in an intensive marketing campaign. PDP monitors between each machine in the exhibit hall presented the product features and explained how the new models have been upgraded and how they outperform the competition. The visitors were divided into several groups. BG sales professionals and staff from R&D were assigned to each one.

The Machine Tools BG is also scheduled to take part in EMO, among the four main events in the global machine tool industry, in Milan October 5-10. The BG will promote turning centers and machining centers, which are its mainstay product lines, and will put special emphasis on the latest models. In the process, Doosan Infracore will demonstrate once again that it is one of the world’s top machine tool makers.

Shanghai Machine Tools Technical Center Upgraded

About 50 percent of all machine tools used in China are concentrated in the East Coast region, which includes Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou. Competition among machine tool makers continues to intensify here, and the BG must urgently secure differentiation strategies that can sustain sales growth.

To this end, the Machine Tools BG officially reopened its Shanghai Technical Center on April 5. The Center now is equipped with both integrated and specialized functions, providing services that cover product sales as well as applied technology support.

The 2-story Shanghai Technical Center includes a showroom on one level that displays some ten different lathes and multi-function machining & turning centers and performs test cutting. The other level features a facility for running training programs on machine programming, operation and technology.

Application engineers are now permanently on staff at the Center, which has an “System Engineering (SE) Room” for providing dealers and customers with consultation services. A new videoconference system enables technical discussion between Chinese and Korean operations in real time. The Machine Tools BG is thus ready to examine the specifications customers need and offer the applied technical support and optimized solutions in a timely fashion.

The BG now operates three Chinese technical centers, which have deployed service engineers in twenty different regions. “Dealer service posts” have also been established as part of an interactive service network that helps customers to raise their productivity.

Doosan Infracore entered the Chinese machine tool market 18 years ago and established a machine tool factory in Yantai (Shandong Province) in 2003. Technical Centers have been opened in Shanghai (2001), Beijing (2005) and Guangzhou (2007), and now the Shanghai Center has been upgraded to serve customers better.

Meanwhile, the Machine Tools BG is now building a global product support system that will be comprised of 41 technical centers worldwide.

The 14th annual Indian Machine Tool Exhibition opened in Bangalore January 22-28, and the Machine Tools BG took advantage of this opportunity to show why Doosan Infracore is a top-tier machine tool maker with a diverse lineup to suit any budget and need. High-end models such as the PUMA MX2500LST (multifunction machining and turning center), PUMA TT2000SY (multi-axis turning center), and VMD D600/5AX (5-axis machining center) were on display at the Doosan booth. Meanwhile, three Indian dealers showed the economically-priced DNM and Lynx series.

The BG hosted a dinner party for more than 50 people from the local dealerships on the evening of January 23. The participants were briefed on the latest technologies and shown case studies covering the delivery of system applications. The presentations were designed to improve their marketing capabilities and to instill greater pride in being part of the Doosan team.

India is categorized as an "emerging" machine tools market, but the recent downturn in the global economy has prompted many Indian companies to delay new facilities investments. Therefore, most of the companies that deal in machine tools are currently in difficulty.

For its part, the Machine Tools BG is busy preparing for when the economy recovers. The Technical Center, which was established in India last year, has been helping to raise customer satisfaction by providing better customer services and technical support. Further efforts will also be made to raise competitiveness by bolstering dealers' sales capabilities.

The IMTEX is organized by the Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers' Association. This year, more than 1,200 companies from twenty-four nations took part. Products on display included metal-cutting machine tools, cutting tools, tooling systems, machine tool accessories and metrology and CAD/CAM systems.
